It’s the rest of the week. What’s keeping you from rest?
Yesterday someone mentioned how easy it can be to feel guilty about enjoying the simple pleasures and opportunities that come up in day to day life.
It was a helpful observation—reminding me of all the times I’ve felt like I cannot quite relax for some undefined sense that I should be doing something more important.
The unfinished business of your whole life can stack up somewhere deep inside and cast a shadow over whatever it is you’re about to do—like it’s never the right time to relax, to rest, to have fun.
Yes, attend to that stash of stuff.
Also, take your moments and live them freely—notice what delights you, find the fun. Resist paralysis.
What makes you smile? What makes you laugh? What makes you sigh in contentment?
Engage it freely.
All this past week the news outlets warned us that Friday it would snow. This is serious in Charlotte, N.C. where snow is rare and the DMV isn’t equipped to clear roads quickly. Schools, churches, and business changed their hours. Gatherings were cancelled.
The snow was fleeting, but beautiful. It quickly turned to sleet and this morning we woke up to the glisten of an ice-coated world with a slight dusting of snow still on the ground.
Ricardo and I bundled up and went for a walk, careful not to slip and fall on the patches of ice. It was glorious.
Down the road, our neighbors had their young children out on tiny skis, guiding them down the hint of a slope in the side yard. It was really more of a water slide than a bunny hill—and it was delightful to watch.
There is always fun to be had, rest to be taken.
May you engage freely. And may your rest be sweet.
