It’s the rest of the week and if, perchance, resting right here, right now, feels impossible, let me remind you that practicing rest is worth it.
The more we practice shifting out of the life-draining high RPM red zone into a friendlier and more efficient gear, the easier it gets. Also the more familiar it feels.
You will begin to notice uncharacteristic calm in the most unexpected of places—
On the freeway when someone cuts you off.
At the grocery store when the cashier is rude.
In conversations that get heated.
When someone accuses you of something (right or wrong).
At the airport when you’ve been waiting in line for luggage carts and discover that, in this particular airport, if you really want a cart, you’ll need to run to the head of the line (yes, past everyone else and faster than the others who are doing the same thing) and grab a cart from the person pushing them in before they’re gone.
(True story, just happened).
And also when you read the news or are privy to yet another horrific incident.
You will notice more quickly the feelings of unrest and be able to name the wrongs without spiraling into a state generalized unrest.
This experience helps you believe—for real—that worry/stress/etc. does not help.
Like Paul wrote in one of his first letters to new believers in what is now modern day central Turkey:
“Let’s not become discouraged in doing good, for in due time we will reap, if we do not become weary.” (Galatians 6:9)
So let’s keep at this rest thing.
Oh yes, one more perk—it seems that it’s easier to notice the good things and gifts when you are more at rest. And we all know that gratitude is a great buffer against stress.
Whether you”re resting already or still shifting gears, may your rest be sweet.
